Matthew Spencer worked as a newspaper journalist for 20 years. He has written for The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian Financial Review, as well as publications in Kenya and Uganda.
Matthew has an Honours degree in English Literature from the University of Sydney. He lives in Balmain with his wife and three children.
Black River is his first novel. It was published in Australia and NZ by Allen & Unwin in June 2022 and will be published in the US, Canada and the UK by Thomas & Mercer in July 2023. Black River is the first book in a planned trilogy centred around the NSW Homicide Detective Sergeant Rose Riley. Matthew is working now on the second book in the series.
